Skyscraper by Harry Winston, Cabochon Sapphire and Diamond Ring from the New York Collection

You probably already have seen this ring many times. The first time I saw it, I wasn’t so sure about the cushion-cut cabochon “sugarloaf” shape of the sapphire, but I really grew fond of it with time. Cabochons* are so often underestimated. In this Skyscraper Ring, the very modern and simple perspective of the gem allows a particularly interesting view “inside” the sapphire, which I must say is a gem full of wonders when you look at it more carefully with a loupe… It sounds a little nerdy, but you’d be amazed… Maybe I’ll write a post about Sapphire inclusions one day!

Have you seen the beautiful McQueen mermaids on the runway last week? I know, I knwo this is supposed to be a jewelry blog, but look at the pictures and you’ll understand. They all look like corals. There is jewelry too, as if these mermaids had discovered a pirate’s treasure. They remind me so much of Jason de Caires Taylor‘s Silent Evolution underwater sculpture parc.

“We Need Armor”

“As I grew older and went out into the world, I realized that actually it wasn’t a very friendly place to be in and I thought… we need armor!” I really admire Daphne Guinness’ style, the fact that she is a true collector, her creativity. Her sense of humor too. And, more especially, I love how she uses her jewelry to, as she puts it, “look a little bit more frightening”… As if she were hiding behind this concept of armor when in fact she creates it.

Shawish created, what hardly seems possible, a ring made of one single faceted diamond reportedly weighing 150 cts. and will retail for £43 million. According to Shawish, who patented the concept, it is the “first diamond ring”. This definitely will give a kick to the whole industry. I’m looking forward to see what’s coming next.
